Communication/Conference: Zentiva in Nigeria to provide population with access to affordable and quality drugs

April 1st, 2016 - www.thisdaylive.com

The ThisDayLive.com website announces the launch of Zentiva in Nigeria and highlights the counterfeiting issue in connection with the access to medicines in this country. Africa is the region the most affected by fake medicines, and specifically sub-Saharan Africa where 30% of medicines are counterfeit, adulterated, substandard, illegally imported or mislabeled.

Nigeria is therefore facing a high level of trafficking in counterfeit drugs probably rated between 30 to 60%. However, the health authority in the country, NAFDAC, is proactive and regularly seizes and arrests counterfeiters or resellers. People have very limited or no access to essential and good quality care, and are usually victims of serious infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV-AIDS. In this context, it was urgent for Sanofi to help this country particularly affected by this scourge by implementing a production site with safer generic drugs for Nigerian and regional patients. The generic medicines are legal copies of “princeps” drugs with lower cost. They remain high quality medicines.

The Director of Sanofi Nigeria-Ghana, Abderrahmane Chikabi, said "Zentiva is a Sanofi company and is the third leader in the field of generics. Zentiva produces and distributes cost-effective generic medicines approved by NAFDAC, and thus provides quality care to patients in the whole region. Zentiva offers a broad portfolio of generic drugs covering all major therapeutic areas: cardiovascular, female health, respiratory, anti-infectives and anti-fungals, urology, central nervous system, pain and gastrointestinal."
