Communication/Conference: UNODC launches an awareness campaign on the 250 billion $ generated annually by counterfeiting

January 14, 2014 – ONUDC.COM

A new global campaign initiated by UNODC was launched today to raise awareness among consumers about 250 billion $ annually under the smuggling of counterfeit goods. The campaign "Counterfeiting: Do not support organized crime" - makes consumers aware that the purchase of counterfeit goods can be a source of funding for organized crime groups, putting the health and safety of consumers at risk and causes of other ethical and environmental concerns. Fraudulent medications also pose a serious risk to the health of consumers. Criminal activity in this area is of great magnitude: selling fraudulent medications East Asia and the Pacific to Southeast Asia and Africa stands alone 5 billion dollars per year, a considerable sum introduced into the illicit economy.
