Communication / Conference: Sanofi participates in the 2017 World Anticounterfeiting Day dedicated to medicines

Unifab

Unifab (Union des Fabricants) held the 20th edition of World Anticounterfeiting Day on 7 June 2017. This year's event spotlighted counterfeit drugs, which have topped the list of the largest seizures made by French Customs over the past three years. And topping the list gives impressive numbers: with more than 2.5 million fake products intercepted, the drug sector is particularly affected by counterfeiting.

Sanofi and other French laboratories participated in the event in the good company of several national and international personalities. LEEM Director Philippe Lamoureux underlined that France is often used as a transit zone and thus not spared from counterfeiting. Pharmaceutical crime uses all possible vectors, including the online sale of medicines.

Speaking to an audience of nearly 200 people, Geoffroy Bessaud, the Head of Anti-Counterfeiting Coordination at Sanofi, explained how the Central Anticounterfeiting laboratory (LCAC) at the Sanofi Tours site analyzes falsified drugs from around the world (more than 2600 products in 2016) and how Sanofi protects patients from unsure products. "Through the coordination of healthcare actors for the deployment of these sophisticated technologies, we can collectively continue to improve our efforts to protect patients from falsified medicines", he concluded.
