A bill on ratification of the first international treaty against counterfeit medical products and similar crimes involving threats to public health, the Medicrime Convention of the Council of Europe, has been presented to the Russian President Vladimir Putin for submission to the State Duma. The Convention has been signed in Russia on October 28, 2011. Moreover, Roszdravnadzor announced that the amount of falsified drugs have decreased by half over that period. About 600 series of medicines have been seized and destroyed in Russia over the period January-September. Series can cover 10 thousand to 80 thousand packages. Russian experts reported that the most falsified medicines were antibiotics, painkillers and drugs for gastrointestinal problems. The current criminal liability in Russia for counterfeiting medicines and selling them is up to 12 years of imprisonment and a fine up to RUB 5 million (or USD 86,010).
