In the frame of the 18th International Pharmaceutical Forum organized in Alger on May 15th, 2017, Djamel Brika, Director of the public relations department at the General Directorate of the Algerian Customs, explained that customs officers did not received any specific training to recognize the counterfeit drugs, which is an especially difficult task. M. Brika asked to the medicine manufacturers to invite custom officers to visit their premises, to acquire the knowledge required to determine if a drug is counterfeited or not. M. Birka also explained that, for example, important amounts of drugs were seized at Tébessa and at Tamanrasset in the South of the country, but that it was not possible to ascertain if the drugs were genuine or not.

Algerian Customs seized 17,272 boxes of counterfeit drugs in 2016, for a total value of DZD 1.2 million (USD 11,059) and, since 2017, they opened 9 cases concerning 13,809 units.
