Legislation: Medicrime convention, a binding international instrument in the service of the protection of fake drugs’ victims

Medicrime Convention, the first international treaty to establish a criminal legal framework to prevent and combat threats to public health, has been signed by 24 countries and ratified by 5 countries. Its entry into is scheduled for the first January 2015. The mission of this binding international instrument's, according to the Council of Europe, to counter cases of counterfeit medical products and similar crimes which undetermine public trust in healthcare systems and authorities’ surveillance. According to the Director General of the IFPMA (International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations), the fight against counterfeit drugs is growing and strong legislative frameworks are needed to curb the phenomenon.
