Technology: In Brazil, national drug tracking system launched in August

Correio Braziliense

The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) announced that a new national drug tracking system would start being tested in August, for one year. In its first stage, the system will include 5 types of medicines. The tracking system that will be fully set in 2022 will be narrower than imagined in 2009, when the law was initially adopted, and will not include the drugs distributed through the Unified Health System, nor those provided by the tuberculosis and AIDS programs. For ANVISA, the priority is to target medicines likely to be counterfeited and widely used, such as antibiotics or drugs for hypertension and diabetes. A first version of the regulation regarding the implementation of this test system has been published by ANVISA, and will be amended in the following months.
