On April 5, 2016, in Paris, the three French scientific Academies were mobilized against the scourge of counterfeit medicines. The Academy of Medicine, the Academy of Pharmacy and the Veterinary Academy and the three Orders organized a conference to alert the public about the seriousness of the risks of falsified medicines, booming in France and worldwide.

The announcement of this conference came as France and other European countries are planning to ratify the Medicrime Convention of the Council of Europe on the counterfeiting of medical products and similar crimes involving threats to public health. Today, only six countries have ratified the Convention: Armenia, Hungary, Moldova, Spain, Ukraine and Guinea1.

After the conference, a common manifesto which calls for international prevention and enforcement measures - considered too low today - was signed and will be presented to the French Health Minister, Marisol Touraine. The six French organizations define the pharmaceutical crime as terrorism and call for the same sanctions to be applied.

According to the three Academies, the population is not well informed on the matter and would benefit of a larger communication. Sanofi supports this initiative which is part of the implementation of concrete actions against the criminals who manufacture and sell fake medicines, and threaten global public health.
