Technology: German researchers invent anti-counterfeiting 3D microstructures

Optics company Zeiss, in partnership with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, published a paper detailing a technique called multistep 3D optical laser lithography. This is a step up from 2D security features such as holograms. The 3D microstructures are 100 μm long and require a special microscope to detect, making it difficult for forgers to copy. Creators say this technology could be embedded in foil to serve as security tags for pharmaceuticals, among other applications.
