Communication/Conference: Fake drugs, “silent killers” of the Somali population

July 3rd 2015 - www.allafrica.com

Mogadishu, capital of Somalia, includes clinics and pharmacies on almost every street corner, most unregistered and employing unqualified staff. The offer of drugs at attractive prices keeps a steady stream of customers. The effects of fake medicines in the treatment of diseases are very serious. Indeed, testimonies shows that a woman has lost the sensibility of her lower limbs and ended up covered with white blisters after taking a fake drug against migraine. Furthermore, a 52 years-old became bedridden after taking fake anti malaria. According to the doctor of a hospital, these falsified and expired drugs are “silent killers” more deadly than bombs and rockets.
