According to Charles Boguifo, president of the National Council of Pharmacists, 30% of drugs on the Ivory Coast market would be counterfeit – antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-tuberculosis – amounting to an XOF 50 to 80 billion (or USD 88 to 142 million) to loss for the pharma industry. In this worrying new trend, a host of illegal labs have popped up, especially in the Cocody area. Authorities are contemplating universal coverage as a way to combat fake drugs trafficking.
