September 29th, 2016 - EUIPO - Report “The economic cost of IPR infringement in the pharmaceutical sector”

A study of the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), published in September 2016, focuses on the economic impact of counterfeit medicines in the European Union marketplace and its wider costs to industry, government and society as a whole. Fake medicines cost the EU pharmaceutical sector 10.2 billion euros each year and the loss of 37,700 jobs. The study refers only to manufacturing and wholesale and does not include retailers such as pharmacies.
